The World’s Oldest Person Dies

The world’s oldest person, Misao Okawa, a 117-year-old woman, died today, according to the Guinness World Records.  What a remarkable milestone and just imagine all of the histories that Ms. Okawa experienced.

Misao Okawa’s 117-year lifespan highlights a growing trend of longevity.  The U.S. population is rapidly aging.  By 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s projections, 25% of Americans will be 65 or older and at least 400,000 will be 100 or older.  With medical advances, some predict that humans will remain healthy and productive to the age of 120 or more.  And, as our aging population increases and lives longer, it is imperative that we do more to police skilled nursing facilities and residential care facilities.  Our state and federal agencies are failing to enforce repeated offenders’ regulatory violations.  They are failing to hold nursing homes accountable.  We need to do more.
