What is a Skilled Nursing Facility and Who Regulates Them?

What is a Skilled Nursing Facility and Who Regulates Them? – Skilled Nursing Facility are suitable for residents that require 24 hour a day care and often are moderately or fully unable to care for themselves, either due to an acute condition (e.g., recovering from hip surgery) or a chronic condition (e.g., stroke victim).

Skilled nursing facilities are licensed by California Department of Public Health. They must meet both California and federal regulations.

Not all skilled nursing facilities are the same. We recommend that family research the survey and complaint history of a facility, as well as tour the facility and determine what services they will offer to your loved one to ensure that the facility is a right fit for your loved one. We recommend that you look at previous Department of Public Health surveys and investigations. Click here to check facility’s survey and complaint history.
