What is an ALF/RCFE and Is It The Right Fit For Your Loved Ones? – Assisted living facilities are another form of RCFE (Residential Care Facility for the Elderly). Typically the primary difference between an assisted living facility and a board and care home is the size of the facility. While board and care homes tend to be smaller (less than 10 beds), assisted living facilities are generally larger communities and can have anywhere from 10-200 residents. Assisted living facilities are designed for independent elderly persons who do not need 24 hour assistance.
Assisted living facilities are not medical facilities. As a result, there are limitations on who these facilities may care for. In some instances, assisted living facilities may be able to care for patients with dementia (requires a dementia waiver). If a resident’s medical needs increase, an assisted living facility may no longer be able to safely care for your loved one.
